WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CAPOEIRA?
We know capoeira can be quite intimidating at first glance but as a beginner you are not expected to do cartwheels and handstands from the start. However, your fitness will build up from day one and after just a few training sessions you will be surprised by what you can do. Capoeira is one of the few activities where men, women, and children can participate on an equal playing ground. In capoeira, there is no discrimination of size, age, or ability. If you’d like to know what’s really in it for you beyond the hype, read on to discover what you can expect in terms of health, fitness, and over all lifestyle benefits. There are numerous benefits as to why capoeira is an excellent extra curricular activity for you, your friends, and family.

STRENGTH
Capoeira will help you to develop more strength, endurance, flexibility, and agility than your average kickboxing or aerobics class. The basis for capoeira is the constant motion of your body, side-to-side and front to back. You’ll develop a strong upper body, core, and buns of steel quickly, shifting your weight back and forth with knees bent and arms swinging. Now continue that back and forth movement for an hour and see if it doesn’t do more for your butt than a bicycle seat.

CONFIDENCE

Capoeira, quite simply, teaches you to believe in yourself. Capoeira is a total body expression and is perfect for instilling a sense of pride and confidence in anyone who practices. As one grows more confident in the martial art, he or she also grows more confident in the ability to express one’s unique voice.

LANGUAGE
You may not become fluent (though that’s always a possibility) but there is no doubt that you will come to understand and perhaps speak a bit of Brazilian Portuguese through the teachings of Capoeira.

SOCIAL
Capoeira is not a solitary sport. It is instead a communal experience that can teach you to respect and relate to others. It is a cultural activity as well as a sport! There is a strong social side to Capoeira. We can’t speak for every capoeira academy but I know when you join ours you become part of a family. You will definitely make friends along the way and meet new people from all over the world through capoeira events and practice. Lasting relationships are built and genuine friends are made. The majority of our students (kids, parents, and adult students) spend time with each other after and outside of class time.

MUSIC
All capoeiristas must understand that music is as important to capoeira as the ginga (the basic movement). Perhaps more important, in fact, because without the berimbau to lead, there could be no jogo. And without the jogo, there is no true capoeira.
